Albert Caines was born on August 15, 1927 to Abraham and Mary Caines in New York City, New York. He was one of nine children. He was raised in Harlem. Growing up, he worked for his father’s soda distribution company while attending school. After leaving high school, Albert enlisted in the Army in 1945.
Albert would go on to have a stellar military career. He held several positions, ranging from a military police officer to a medic. During the later phase of his military career, Albert completed a rigorous training program to become a bio-medical technician.
While in the military, Albert was stationed in various locations such as Europe and Asia, as well as several posts within the US. Also, during this time, he married his childhood friend Margaret Jones. They grew up in the same neighborhood back in New York City and remained in contact throughout their early adult lives. They were married in 1962. The couple had two children, a daughter, Marguerite Elaine Caines and a son, David Thomas Caines. Being a military family, they moved around to different locals, including Okinawa.
The family eventually settled in Wheaton Maryland in the late 1960’s. After serving a tour in Vietnam, Albert retired from the Army in the early 1970’s with 26 years of total service. He went to work at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC, where he remained until his retirement in 1992. He was a supervising bio medical technician. His group was responsible for the maintenance needs of the hospital’s medical devices.
Outside of work, Albert enjoyed reading the paper, doing crossword puzzles and going fishing. He loved watching wartime movies, especially ones staring John Wayne. On the weekends, he loved to go to the military Post Exchange to get his hair cut, do some shopping and see friends from work. He took a lot of pride providing for his family and ensuring they had everything they needed. He was a man of few words. He’d rather let his actions speak for him. If he told you he was going to do something, you could bet it would happen.
Later in his life he began to suffer from Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Eventually, he moved into Assisted Living where he spent the final few years of his life. He was beloved there, the various caregivers and nurses that cared for him came to love him very much.
Albert departed this life on Wednesday, January 17, 2018. He is preceded in death by his parents, most of his siblings and his dear Margaret. He is survived by his daughter Marguerite, her son David (Erin) and granddaughter Moriya. He also survived by a host of friends and family who will truly miss him. May he rest in peace.
