Dr. Adriaan M. de Graaf, a retired materials physicist, passed away in Winchester, Virginia on April 8th, 2019, in his 83th year. He was born on August 4th, 1935 in Naaldwijk, Netherlands. After completing his education in Switzerland, he started his career in Brazil and eventually came to the U.S. in 1965 to raise his family.

An avid reader and a home-improvement enthusiast, he was well known for his principled work ethic and love of the natural world. Fluent in 5 languages, he traveled the world to bring the promise of technology to diverse cultures.

Back home, he taught his sons the value of hard work and having a worldly perspective. So principled and worldly this perspective was, his sons still have nightmares about their father waking them up before dawn to shovel snow off the driveway, mow the lawn or roll heavy boulders up and down the hill at their long-time home in Derwood, Maryland.

He is survived by his wife Rita, their two sons, Jean and Peter, and his grandson Matthew.
