Abigail Leigh Prestin, 34, of Milford, CT, passed away peacefully on September 3rd, 2014 after a year long struggle with lymphoma. She was born on February 21, 1980 to Daniel Prestin, and the late Pamela Prestin in Milford.
Abby completed her undergraduate studies in Journalism at New York University, and worked at the Yale Child Study Center after college. Her mother’s untimely passing from colon cancer inspired her goal of helping ease the burden of illness on families and their loved ones, and she went on to earn her Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Health Communication from the University of California at Santa Barbara. Her doctoral dissertation examined how media can help generate hope and motivation for those facing health challenges such as cancer. After earning her PhD degree, she joined the National Cancer Institute as a post-doctoral fellow, where she was a prolific scientist in the areas of social media, cancer communication, and obesity prevention. Since 2013 she was employed as a social scientist at the Center for Tobacco Products at the Food and Drug Administration. Abby was an avid musician, playing the bass in musical groups in Connecticut and California. In all of her roles, she has touched many lives with her good humor, kindness, and generosity, as well as with her hard work and determination.
She is survived by her husband Thomas Hogan, father Daniel, step-mother Hazel, brothers Adam and Alex, and dogs Mishka and Yuuki.
