Aaliyah Charmae Joiner, 11, of 3332 Pleasant Plain Ave., died Tuesday (Dec. 5, 2006) in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, as the result of a gunshot wound.
She was born Oct. 13, 1995, in Elkhart to Jarvis and Tiana (Warren) Joiner.
Her parents survive, along with three sisters, Akyah Taylor and Abryntinia Graham, both at home, and Alexis Joiner of Muncie; a brother, Jarvis Joiner Jr. of Muncie; maternal grandmother Alice Warren of Elkhart; maternal grandfather and stepgrandmother, John Sr. and Lela Warren of South Bend; paternal grandmother Beverly Ellison of Indianapolis; maternal great-grandparents Ruth Childress and Ellen Warren, both of Elkhart; and paternal great-grandparents James and Lucy Royal of Elkhart.
Aaliyah was a fifth-grade student at Hawthorne Elementary School and was active in all girls sports, including volleyball, basketball, softball and track. Her No. 23 basketball jersey has been retired.
She was often seen at Tolson Center after school, where she would play basketball. She also played basketball for the Indy Wildcats in Indianapolis.
She loved to talk and had a persistent smile. She loved to cook, play video games and make people happy. Math was her favorite subject.
